Lilly Reid is a ceramic artist based in the UK. Her sculptural forms are a combination of wheel thrown pottery and hand built sculpture, married together to depict British wildlife asleep within floral grasses (such as foxtail and Yorkshire fog).
Lilly first sculpts a form from stoneware clay into the shape of the animal in question. She then completes the form by throwing a bowl on the pottery wheel and delicately merging the two. These forms then required days to fully dry before she can decorate the piece with oxides and carefully carve the floral patterns into the body of work by hand (this technique is called Sgraffito). Each sculpture is given a further week to fully dry and then kiln fired at a temperature of over 1200 degrees celsius for 18 hours.
